Claw2 for single and two person tents

The curvature + barbs mean the device does not need deep burial. Tension tries to rotate the flukes into the ground or against the object they have hooked, rather than levering a long shaft out.

How it works on different surfaces

Soil / turf

Place the plate on the surface and press or step. The three flukes enter at a shallow angle. Wind load on the guy line pulls the curved tips deeper and the barbs lock. Three contact points stop it spinning. Because the attachment is on the plate (not high on a shaft), there is little lever arm.

Rocks and cracks

Use it as a grapnel. Jam one or two flukes into a fissure or over an edge. The plate and remaining fluke give extra purchase. Barbs help it stay put if the rock is irregular.

Trees, roots, platforms

Hook a fluke around a root, small trunk, or board edge. For larger trees a short webbing sling can wrap the trunk and clip to the eye. Same device, no extra pegs.

Hard or frozen ground

The short length is an advantage—you are not fighting 6–8 inches of penetration. Press what you can; the remaining flukes can still hook irregularities.

Why it stays attached to the guy rope

The eye and slot are sized so the guy line can be permanently threaded (or quickly clipped with a small carabiner). You never hunt for a loose peg at pack-up, and the load is always applied at the designed low point.
